Is $2,800 to replace evaporator coil and refill refrigerant a fair price?
Project Details
My Lennox AC unit is less than 5 years old and stopped blowing cold air. An HVAC technician confirmed a refrigerant leak and that the system had essentially zero refrigerant. He suspected the leak was near the evaporator coil and thought it was likely caused by poor workmanship during installation. The original installer won't cover it under warranty. I'm frustrated that a unit this new is having problems. I got a second opinion from another tech who thinks replacing the entire system might be unnecessary but needs to inspect it. I don't want to spend a lot if I don't have to, but I want peace of mind. I'm currently leaning towards replacing the entire system because a company offering this option provides a 5-year full labor/workmanship warranty and a 10-year parts warranty. I'm also curious if replacing an evaporator coil is just a temporary fix or if it would last a long time on a relatively new system.
