Is $2,540 to replace evaporator coil a fair price?
Project Details
My current AC unit is a Carrier model 24ABB448A300, installed in 2009. It has a cooling capacity of 4 tons, a 13 SEER rating, single-stage cooling, and uses R-410A refrigerant. For the past two years, I've been experiencing cooling issues and sometimes noticing ice on the lines. A technician recently confirmed it's low on coolant, indicating a leak. The technician suggested either replacing the coils and refilling the system or doing a full system replacement. Financially, a full replacement would be stressful as I've already had foundation work done this year, but I'm concerned about throwing money away on a repair. The technician mentioned he could install an R32-compatible coil, which would allow for a future condenser replacement. I'm waiting to hear back from another company regarding a replacement quote, as they only provided one for repair.
