Is $2,000 to replace AC and furnace capacitors a fair price?
Project Details
My furnace / AC system had not been serviced in several years. During a maintenance check, the tech told me both the AC and furnace capacitors were failing and wanted $2000 to replace them. I went online and found out that capacitor replacement is the most common reason for a service call and that there are tons of YouTube videos showing how to replace them safely. I confirmed with my multimeter that the original capacitors were indeed failing (the old capacitor read 3.5 microfarads, and the label said 5). I believe this was a straight up scam by the tech, as I was able to replace them myself for $20 each. 8 months later, when the AC failed, I fixed it by replacing the capacitor.
