Is $2,800 to replace furnace and water heater ducting and chimney liner a fair price?
Project Details
My furnace and water heater exhaust ducting in the basement, which goes up through a 2-story chimney, was found to be shoddy and below code during an inspection. The chimney was unlined and uncapped, leading to corrosion at the base of the Y fitting. The purchase agreement for my home included the seller replacing the ducting and lining the chimney, but the work done was inadequate. An HVAC tech informed me about the issues, including the huge span of the water heater exhaust, taped duct segments, an undersized liner, incorrect duct material (should be double-walled B type), and wrong Y fitting configuration. I am pursuing money from the seller for this, as I believe there's an expectation of "good and workmanlike" repairs in Michigan. I'm seeking expert opinions on the severity of the duct work, remediation steps, and immediate dangers. I also want to know if the water heater exhaust should join on the bottom of the joint since it's passive exhaust versus the furnace's fan exhaust, and if the open air in the basement means there's no combustibles issue for the venting type.
