Is $8,000 to replace ductwork and relocate attic unit a fair price?
Project Details
I’ve got a 2-ton unit in the attic of my 2-story house, accessed via a full walk up “3rd floor attic”. I have been dealing with crap air flow to peripheral registers, namely the ones furthest from the unit itself. I found that the supply trunk isn’t sealed and I’m getting a lot of cold air into the attic instead of the intended, conditioned space. None of the joints in the ductwork that I looked at were sealed. My HVAC guy noted that the location of the unit is not ideal for flow, the return duct is undersized (12” return; upstairs is roughly 1100-1200 sqft), and the ducts were original to the house and leaking. The unit in the attic is approximately 11 years old. The price isn’t something I’m really shocked about, mostly because of the effort needed to go up and down multiple flights of stairs, temps in the attic, etc. I’m just questioning because I’ve read that in the SE the average lifespan is 10-15 years anyway. If this unit was original to me I’d be comfortable waiting because I keep up with the maintenance. This unit has an unknown history so I don't know. I don’t want to be the next HVAC customer con.
