Is $3,500 to replace interior evaporator coil a fair price?

Project Details

My upstairs AC unit is not working. My parents spent $2500 last year replenishing freon, and I recently paid $800 for a diagnostic which identified the problem as an interior evaporator coil. I don't use the heater/furnace at all, so I'm leaning towards a 'half system' replacement without the furnace. I'm concerned about compatibility issues since new units are likely R-410A while current units are R-22, and also about airflow, blower strength, and avoiding huge bills from inefficient systems. We are currently paycheck to paycheck and trying to start up a farm, so I'm trying to get more offers.
