Is $3,000 to replace the indoor coil of an existing AC unit a fair price?
Project Details
My trusty American Standard 2.5 ton unit is 15 years old and has developed a leak in the indoor coil. It still cools but it’s clearly leaking and the coil will need to be replaced. I have a couple of coil replacement bids in the $3000-3500 range, which is a bit of a shock because it is more than double the last coil replacement I had a few years ago on a different unit. Something about the refrigerant being phased out and the coil not being made anymore. But I did hear that prices went up unreasonably during COVID. I could keep looking for someone to do it cheaper. The tech also suggested a new system saying that 15 years is about as long as I should reasonably expect that system to last. A new system would be in the $15,000 to 20,000 range. I honestly don’t know if I will be in the house more than 5 more years so I lean toward a coil replacement. But the tech said probably it’s just going to get more expensive to keep that old system going for 5 more years. I'm looking for advice on whether to replace the coil or get a new system, as this is an expensive decision either way.
