Is $16,000 to replace a 5-ton AC unit with a two-stage Lennox or Trane system a fair price?
Project Details
My 13-year-old AC unit has failed due to a leaking evap coil, and repairing it would cost almost half of a new setup. I live in a 2400 sq/ft, 2-story house with a single 5-ton, single-stage unit and 3 zones. I'm seeking third-party advice on the quotes I've received, as I'm unsure about the validity of the recommendations. I'm willing to pay more for quality but question if the $8,000 price difference for a variable speed unit is justified, as it seems higher than typical online.

Replace a 2-ton AC system
This quote is for the replacement of an existing 2-ton AC system, including both the indoor coil and the outdoor unit. - AC Unit: American Standard - Cooling Capacity: 2-ton - Efficiency (SEER): 16 - Refrigerant: 454 (new refrigerant) - Scope: New evaporation coil and new outside unit - Rationale: The contractor stated that 410a refrigerant can no longer be installed, and replacing only the coil would lead to obsolescence once the compressor fails.
