Is $7,000 to install a higher efficiency Bryant furnace a fair price?

I have an old Haier furnace from 1995, which is an 80% efficiency unit for my 1040 sq ft home. It's still running fine, but both an inspector and an HVAC professional warned me it could fail at any time, which is concerning for midwest winters. I'm trying to make a plan for replacement. I'm also considering an offer from my ex-landlord to install a Goodman furnace at cost, as I don't really want to spend $7,000 if I can get a better deal and learn in the process. I'm concerned about the ducting work, as I don't think my ex-landlord would do the same level of duct modification (moving things and using new ducting) that the professional discussed. I'm also questioning if a 2-stage furnace would be cost-effective for my small house (1040 sq ft plus basement) in terms of energy bill savings.
