Is $10,000 to replace entire HVAC system due to unfixable Freon leak a fair price?
Project Details
My AC suddenly quit a few weeks ago. A semi-retired HVAC guy quickly diagnosed a Freon leak, added four pounds, and got it working again for a reasonable charge. However, he advised that the leak itself isn't fixable and the Freon fill might only last through this AC season. He also mentioned he wouldn't be able to add Freon again if it fails. He recommended replacing the entire system, including the furnace, not just the AC components, estimating the cost around $10,000 now. I'm trying to verify if it's truly necessary to replace the furnace along with the AC, or if this recommendation is based on the builder's equipment being subpar. I'm also concerned about a system failing in just six years and if there's an underlying condition that could cause a repeat issue with new equipment. I did not pay for an extended warranty when I bought the house.
Quote Details
This quote is for the replacement of the entire HVAC system, including both the AC components and the gas furnace. The recommendation stems from an unfixable Freon leak in the existing AC unit, which was originally installed in 2019. The current Freon fill is considered a temporary solution, and the technician stated that he would not be able to add Freon again if it fails in the future. - Problem: Unfixable Freon leak in AC unit - Scope: Replacement of entire HVAC system (AC components and gas furnace) - Rationale: Inability to add Freon again, potential subpar builder's equipment
