Is $20,000 to replace the whole HVAC unit a fair price?

Project Details

My 15-year-old HVAC unit has a leak that was identified about 5 years ago; freon was added then, and it ran fine. This past Tuesday, the AC stopped working. I believe it might be a minor leak, and the person who looked at it 5 years ago thought the leak was on the outside unit. I'm wondering if it would be a waste of money to just add more freon hoping the unit could survive another summer. I'm also looking for recommendations for trusted HVAC companies in Southern Chester County with more affordable prices. I'm trying to find out where the refrigerant information is located on the unit.

Quote Details

This quote is for the complete replacement of the existing HVAC unit. The current unit is 15 years old and has a known freon leak.

Replace entire HVAC system due to unfixable Freon leak

This quote is for the replacement of the entire HVAC system, including both the AC components and the gas furnace. The recommendation stems from an unfixable Freon leak in the existing AC unit, which was originally installed in 2019. The current Freon fill is considered a temporary solution, and the technician stated that he would not be able to add Freon again if it fails in the future. - Problem: Unfixable Freon leak in AC unit - Scope: Replacement of entire HVAC system (AC components and gas furnace) - Rationale: Inability to add Freon again, potential subpar builder's equipment
