Is $2,000 to weld evaporator coil to fix Freon leak a fair price?
Project Details
My 3-ton, 23-year-old York home AC (outdoor and attic system) has a Freon leak in the evaporator coil and is no longer cooling. I realize this is a stop-gap band-aid measure for a system that puts off the inevitable, but it sounds better to my pocketbook even if it is a 1-2 summer fix. My concerns are that I could invest $3-4k in the existing coil, but then a month later the condenser or compressor might fail, and I'd be back at square one needing to replace the whole system. I'm in Sacramento, CA, so we have milder winters and hot summers. My neighbors just had a Bosch 3-ton heat pump system installed for $17k, but I'm not sold on needing to switch to a heat pump, despite the apparent advantages, disadvantages, and rebates from our utility company that make a compelling case for the upfront costs. I have a gas furnace and electric AC, both with different utility companies.
