Is $500 to replace an electrical disconnect a fair price?
Project Details
My communicating condenser fan motor quit working, and its replacement became expensive due to the need for a new fan blade. The electrical disconnect on the wall, though functional, exhibits partial arcing erosion and melted copper blades. My original contractor quoted $500 to replace it, but I've decided to do it myself before a second contractor replaces the ECM motor and fan. The original disconnect is a Western U065p model, located in an alcove protected from the weather and rarely used. I'm considering if I should replace it with a better model or if a quick blow fusible system could protect the condenser electronics from power surges that damaged the motor. I'm also concerned about code compliance if I were to wire nut the load lines together, as the current device disconnects both line and load.
