Is $21,000 to replace the entire combination boiler system a fair price?
Project Details
I have an awful combination Navian boiler system that has caused endless headaches. It's a tankless water heater connected to a storage tank, providing water heating and radiant heating for my townhome. Every technician has called out how problematic the system is. I've been working with two companies, Radiant Heating technicians and a certified plumbing company, on repairs. I've had yearly maintenance done. In May 2024, hot water issues led to replacing an inlet filter, leaking isolation cap, ignitor seal, and fixing a condo line. In February 2025, maintenance included wiring the boiler to a circuit, replacing two failing expansion tanks, setting the boiler expansion tank to ~15psi, adding an isolation drain valve, and noting high home pressure (100psi). Seals on the pump also began leaking after repressurizing. In March 2025, a certified plumber fixed the high pressure by replacing/upgrading the pressure reduction valve (PRV) with a brass diaphragm, calibrating it to maintain pressure just under 80 psi, and re-pressurizing the domestic thermal expansion tank. They also noted that the expansion tanks installed by the previous technicians seemed incorrect. In June 2025, I noticed a thumping/whirring sound when hot water was used. The certified plumber diagnosed a frozen Armstrong pump and a frozen recirculation pump. They recommended replacing the entire system. I'm calling the radiant heat technicians back to see if their work contributed to the problem, and I'm seeking input on whether I need to replace the entire system, who should do it, and what exactly should be replaced.
