Is $15,000 to install a total HVAC system replacement with two units or a zoning system a fair price?
Project Details
My wife and I recently purchased a two-story home. The second floor does not have a dedicated HVAC system; instead, it uses a Honeywell damper to control airflow to the top floor. The damper is connected to a thermostat on the second floor, but based on the wiring, it only actuates with fan control. The main issue is that the fan contact stays hot (24V on the G terminal), so if the thermostat is on, the damper runs wide open. This means I can't control the damper based on temperature, which is problematic as it's cold in the morning and hot in the evening. I've called two HVAC companies, but they won't touch the existing system because they didn't design it.
Quote Details
This quote outlines options for a total HVAC system replacement to address inadequate temperature control in a two-story home currently relying on a single-zone damper system. The proposed solutions aim to resolve the issue where the existing Honeywell damper only actuates with fan control, leading to the second floor being either too cold or too hot depending on the time of day. - Option 1: Installation of two dedicated HVAC units, one for each floor, allowing for independent temperature control. - Option 2: Implementation of a comprehensive zoning system, likely utilizing a single main HVAC unit with multiple dampers and thermostats to manage airflow and temperature across different zones (floors) of the house.
