Is $4,600 to repair AC unit after copper line bust and freon leak (Option A) a fair price?
Project Details
My outside AC unit stopped working after a loud pop and flickering lights. A company diagnosed it as a busted copper line that spewed freon, causing the low pressure switch to stop the unit. I found the quotes for repair to be incredibly high, especially for the copper line replacement, filter drier, and condenser coil cleaning. I've since cleaned the condenser coil myself, which took about an hour, and I can't believe it was quoted at $1500. I have a family friend who does HVAC coming to check the copper lines for repair and add freon, and he estimates it will cost $500-1000 to get the unit functional. I also cleaned the inside evaporator coil. The initial service call was $85, and finding the leak was $230, with the service charge waived if further diagnosis or work is performed. The technician was transparent with his diagnosis, providing pictures and videos, but I felt the prices were inflated to push for a full system replacement.
