Is $6,300 to insulate existing HVAC ductwork a fair price?
Project Details
I gutted my basement for waterproofing and noticed condensation and mold on some HVAC runs, especially where they go up to the second-story bathroom. I had the rim joist spray foamed last year, which I thought fixed it, but I recently saw condensation again. An HVAC company recommends insulating or replacing the ducts in the areas to be refinished because they noted rust and evidence of mold/condensation on all lines and the area won't be conditioned after drywall. The area is relatively small (main room 20x22, hallway 20x6). I'm in a LCOL area and feel the quotes are high, especially since I'm paying $8500 for other basement work (waterproofing, window, joist sistering). I'm considering insulating some supply lines myself but don't want issues later. I'm unsure how far up into the walls I'd need to insulate if I DIY. I also wonder if the existing duct is salvageable with mastic/tape/insulation or if new metal is necessary before insulating.
