Is $2,800 to replace a TXV valve a fair price?
Project Details
My AC was installed recently, but it's underperforming. It was installed 1 year ago, but I only started using it 2 months ago when the heat began. The technician says I need to replace the TXV valve. I don't have a warranty on it. I'm concerned that changing the valve might not solve the problem. The AC is only cooling 10 degrees from return to supply, and the technician said the normal temperature difference should be between 15 to 20 degrees. The indoor temperature at the AC return was 75 degrees.

The technician diagnosed the AC system and found that the liquid line is colder than the suction line, indicating a restriction, most likely a failed TXV (thermostatic expansion valve). The proposed work includes: - Recover existing refrigerant (R-410A or as applicable) - Replace the TXV on the indoor coil - Pressure test and evacuate system - Recharge refrigerant to manufacturer specifications - Seal return and supply plenum to improve system performance and efficiency - Perform system startup and verify proper superheat and subcooling
