Is $760 to replace the gas valve on a heater a fair price?

I was originally quoted $1204 to replace the gas valve on our heater. The technician initially stated he wouldn't charge for labor due to the high part price. After we expressed concern about the cost, he lowered the price to $760 via text message 10 minutes later. I'm wondering if $760 is still too high.
