Is $3,300 to replace the compressor on an HVAC unit a fair price?
Project Details
My HVAC unit, which is just over 5 years old, has been having issues for about a month and a half. The previous owners didn't complete the warranty paperwork, so it's not covered by a 10-year warranty. The unit has never had issues keeping the house at 70 degrees Fahrenheit before, even in the North Carolina heat. Initially, a company replaced the capacitor, which seemed to fix it temporarily. Then, they claimed it was low on refrigerant and filled it, but the issue persisted. They then suggested replacing the compressor for $3,300 without fully diagnosing it, which made me seek a second opinion. The second company found and fixed a melted main disconnect on the air handler, replaced a kinked refrigerant line, and replaced a part related to losing suction outside, but the unit is still not cooling properly (temperatures reach 76 upstairs and 74 downstairs). I'm frustrated and wondering if the compressor was the issue all along, or if I'm being given the run around. I've also had the drain line vacuumed out and installed a brand new filter.
