Is $1,761 to replace a bad TXV valve and recharge AC system a fair price?

My compressor was not running, which prompted the initial service call. It had shut off due to overheat/low refrigerant and burning out the capacitor. The technician said the TXV valve was stuck open, which is why it couldn't be recharged with R-22, and they would have to completely refill with 407C. I'm concerned about investing around $2,000 into this system just for the compressor to fail a month from now. However, neither my mother nor I are in a position to fully replace the unit right now, especially considering the $9,000+ quotes we've received for a full replacement.
