Is $24,000 to install a dual fuel gas/heat pump system a fair price?
Project Details
I collected bids for replacing my 26-year-old 80,000 BTU furnace with a dual fuel gas/heat pump system. I chose a company that seemed competent and performed a Manual J calculation. After installation of the new 80,000 BTU furnace and 4-ton heat pump, the system had a static pressure of 1.6 and immediately started short cycling, which has continued for 10 days. I suspect incompetence due to the 4-ton heat pump being installed on 18-inch diameter supply and return ducts. I had asked about ductwork during bidding but trusted the company to address any sizing issues. Now, after spending $24,000, they are preparing a proposal for several thousand dollars more to fix the duct sizing problem.
