Is $16,000 to insulate attic with 10" open cell spray foam and thermal paint a fair price?
Project Details
I'm in New York State and getting quotes for insulating my attic and running into conflicting advice. I'm still debating about attic floor or roof desk, but my question is about spray foam on the roof slopes. We have a large basement so won't ever use our attic for storage, but we do have ductwork and an air handler in the attic for our heat pumps. Would access related to the ductwork/air handler count as "service of utilities"? I can't find a definition of what they refer to as "utilities". Can anyone advise? If they will do the install this way and my city inspector approves it, is this still a bad idea?

Spray foam attic with open-cell insulation
This option includes the removal of existing blown-in insulation and the application of open-cell spray foam insulation to the attic roof line. This type of foam is considered standard in the South due to its performance in hot-humid climates. It offers several benefits over closed-cell foam, including: - Safer Moisture Behavior: Allows the roof deck to dry inward and reveals roof leaks. - Avoids Structural Stress: Flexible and low-density, it does not shrink or pull on roof decking. - Better for Retrofit Fit & Air Sealing: Expands significantly (approx. 100x) to fill gaps completely. - Easier to Modify Later: Soft and easy to remove for future work. - More Cost-Effective: Achieves excellent thermal and air-sealing performance for significantly less money.
Install SilverGlo / rigid foam board insulation in the attic roofline
This option involves insulating the attic roofline to create a semi-conditioned attic space. The insulation material is graphite-infused EPS with a foil barrier. This method is designed to be more effective for air sealing and heat gain, and it allows the attic floor to remain open for storage. - Insulation Type: SilverGlo / rigid foam board (graphite-infused EPS with foil barrier) - Installation Location: Attic roofline - Attic Condition: Semi-conditioned space - Benefits: Enhanced air sealing, reduced heat gain, attic floor remains open for storage
