Is $1,700 to partially remediate moldy AC return duct insulation a fair price?
Project Details
We live in a very hot and dry climate, but excess humidity from a clogged dryer vent caused mold to form on the fiberglass insulation of the return duct to our 4-ton rooftop AC. We tested for mold using one of those Petri dish culture tests from Amazon. It also smells like mold/mildew when the AC is on. The humidity issue is remedied, but what steps should we take to properly fix the mold? We have had a hard time finding a company who will even address this. We called several mold remediation companies who stated that they do not touch HVAC systems, and several HVAC companies who say they will not touch mold. There was only one company who agreed to try to fix it, and they seemed to have done a poor job. Also note we had our regular AC guy come out and he said the problem is not in the drain pan or any other common areas in the unit itself. Is our only option to replace the return ductwork? It's a short run (maybe 15 feet total). Would installing a UV light on the evaporator coil (DIY job) at least prevent/reduce the mold from being recirculated into the supply side? Any insight is appreciated. Edit: Forgot to mention, it's a sheet metal duct with fiberglass insulation inside. Not one of those fiberboard ducts.

The company attempted to address mold on the fiberglass insulation of the AC return duct. - Ripped off fiberglass insulation reachable from inside the house - Installed bubble foil insulation (noted as already falling off) - Ran a fogger Note: Some leftover fiberglass insulation remains in the part of the duct going out of the roof.
