Is $9,000 to replace kitchen countertops a fair price?

Project Details

I had some water damage to my kitchen kick boards which started this project idea. My kitchen hasn't been updated since I put in new floors. I'm currently thinking about getting new countertops and sink, new backsplash, and originally painted cabinets, but now I'm considering dark walnut or espresso stain. I'm finding the quotes I'm getting to be very high and it's causing me stress. I'm open to doing some work myself if I had guidance. I am very wary of getting quotes these days because a plumber quoted me $3500 to replace a $700 water heater tank, which was nearly five times the cost. This experience has made me very on guard with this project.
