Is $10,000 to repair caved-in north and east basement walls a fair price?
Project Details
I've had concerns with my foundation for a couple of years. In my basement, a door stopped latching shut, and its frame has a vertical crack extending to the ceiling. There are similar vertical cracks in the finished basement walls, and a 1/8-inch wide vertical crack (about 2 feet long) in the unfinished part. My house has a block foundation. On the first floor, there's a vertical crack from a baseboard to the window above it, along with some uneven spots in the floor and other minor cracks. I'm skeptical of the foundation repair company's assessment that my north wall has caved in 3/4 of an inch and my east wall has caved in 1/2 an inch, as my dad thinks it might be due to bad drywall work. I'm considering removing some drywall to check the foundation with a leveler myself. I'm confused about the next steps and am trying to find a structural engineer or get a second opinion. I've lived in this 26-year-old house for five years.
