Is $8,000 to redo a 25 m² terrace a fair price?
Project Details
We need help with a terrace renovation project. We have a terrace of around 25 m². The slabs and the layer of sand underneath were recently removed. Below, we discovered an old, very damaged layer of concrete, covered with a completely warped bituminous layer. The problem is that you cannot pour a new screed with a correct slope directly on this base, because it is too irregular and unstable. We called in a contractor for a quote, and he asked us for €8,000 to redo everything, which was unfortunately out of budget for us. So, we wonder if it is feasible to do the work ourselves (at least in part), particularly to remove this layer of concrete/bitumen and start again on a clean base. We are asking for advice on removing the bituminous layer + damaged concrete, whether it's realistic to do this ourselves without much masonry experience, and any tips or mistakes to avoid.
