Is $3,700 to paint two floors of a townhouse a fair price?
Project Details
My boyfriend and I are new homeowners and don't know what we're doing. We hired painters recommended by a neighbor because we wanted everything done before family visits in a couple of weeks, and we didn't get additional quotes. We provided the paint, initially guessing the quantity, and ended up needing many more gallons than anticipated. I was frustrated by the painters constantly asking for more paint after I'd already asked if enough was on hand. We also experienced a language barrier. I'm very non-confrontational and regret not demanding a re-do or discount. We just bought this house and wanted to make it our own, and now I feel like crying because we can't afford to have it re-done professionally. I'm pretty sure these guys don't have an actual business or license. I'm in MD and my house is about 1300 sqft. I have physical limitations, including bad tremors in my hands, which make physical labor challenging, so fixing the sloppy work myself will be difficult and slow. I had intended for the bedroom trim and doors to be color-drenched in teal, but they were painted blue, clashing with the walls and ceiling. I've learned a lot from this experience about what to look for in a contractor and paint quality. I've decided to move on and try to fix the issues myself, starting with the hardwood floors and then the paint, even though it will be a slow process due to my health.

The painting project included two floors of a townhouse, specifically the living room, kitchen, dining area, two bedrooms, an office, hallways, and later, all trim and doors. The homeowner provided the paint. - Areas Painted: Living room, kitchen, dining area, two bedrooms, an office, hallways, all trim, and doors - Paint Source: Homeowner provided all paint (initially 8 gallons, with additional 1-3 gallons purchased daily over 6 days) - Quality Issues: Sloppy work with no taping off edges, resulting in messy contrasting walls and trim - Paint Spills: Paint on hardwood at the base of trim, large drops spilled on an unpainted wall (which was then sanded down, looking terrible), and paint spilled on carpets and hardwood floors in about a dozen spots - Specific Errors: Stairwell edge where painting stops is a disaster with paint brushed over the corner; bedroom trim and doors were painted in the wrong color (blue instead of teal), clashing with the teal walls and ceiling, despite clear instructions during the walkthrough
