Is $2,750 to paint ceilings, trim, and walls in multiple rooms a fair price?
Project Details
My MIL referred her "pro painter" to us and generously paid for part of the job. He doesn’t fully cover the floors, even though we just had our original hardwood refinished and told him that. There are paint specks in multiple rooms. He doesn’t use enough drop cloths. I found paint dripping from a ceiling vent onto the floor. He painted over some vents but not others. I’ve seen drips down walls from using too much paint. He asked us to buy Frog tape and plastic sheeting, but he barely uses them. Our kitchen cabinets were left uncovered and now have specks of paint, and he tried cutting in around them and got paint along the cabinet edges. There’s paint on light fixtures and smoke detectors. He doesn’t clean up any of it himself. He also “patched” some holes, but the patches are either bulging out or still caved in. The house is already in chaos from having everything moved around, and this careless work is really stressing me out. My MIL said “even a good painter leaves paint in unwanted places” and suggested we tape and cover things ourselves. My husband tried to speak to the painter, but it didn’t seem to register as things haven’t gotten better. He left lots of plaster dust on the floor after doing some sanding earlier today - my husband vacuumed it up after he left because it was still there.

Paint two floors of a townhouse
The painting project included two floors of a townhouse, specifically the living room, kitchen, dining area, two bedrooms, an office, hallways, and later, all trim and doors. The homeowner provided the paint. - Areas Painted: Living room, kitchen, dining area, two bedrooms, an office, hallways, all trim, and doors - Paint Source: Homeowner provided all paint (initially 8 gallons, with additional 1-3 gallons purchased daily over 6 days) - Quality Issues: Sloppy work with no taping off edges, resulting in messy contrasting walls and trim - Paint Spills: Paint on hardwood at the base of trim, large drops spilled on an unpainted wall (which was then sanded down, looking terrible), and paint spilled on carpets and hardwood floors in about a dozen spots - Specific Errors: Stairwell edge where painting stops is a disaster with paint brushed over the corner; bedroom trim and doors were painted in the wrong color (blue instead of teal), clashing with the teal walls and ceiling, despite clear instructions during the walkthrough
