Is $2,200 to install a new Hayward Tristar VS 900 pool pump a fair price?
Project Details
My Hayward Tristar VS 900 pool pump is making a loud grinding/rock tumbler sound immediately on startup, and the sound occurs throughout the range of speeds. Water is moving fine with no air bubbles visible. I'm wondering if it's worth trying to DIY repair it or if it's done for, as I would like to try to repair it before buying a new one.

Install a Hayward variable speed pool pump
Quote for installing a Hayward Variable Speed Pump (VSP) for a 28,000-gallon pool. The existing pump is a 1hp single-speed unit. The pool builder claims the electrical, plumbing, and programming for a VSP are more complex than a single-speed pump. The homeowner notes that the pump itself costs $1400-$1500, implying a significant labor cost of over $2000 for the swap. The pool is a traditional chlorine pool with a sand filter, and it lacks a salt water generator (SWG), automation, or a timer, currently using a simple on/off switch.
