Is $14,000 to replace roof shingles with disputed membrane replacement a fair price?

Project Details

I am in New Jersey and just had my roof replaced for about $14,000 (not including skylights and some additional work). At the start of the project, I specifically asked the contractor if the rubber membrane in the low-slope section would be replaced. He said yes. Now that the shingles are done, he’s saying it doesn’t need to be replaced and that the existing membrane is “rated for 50 years.” However, the membrane clearly shows cracking, wrinkling, and visible signs of aging. From what I’ve read and seen, this kind of wear suggests it’s past its prime and shouldn’t be trusted under new roof components. I am seeking opinions on whether I am right to push for replacement and if it's reasonable for him to backtrack like this.

Replace entire roof

The quote was for an entire roof replacement. The homeowner has significant concerns about the quality and execution of the work, specifically noting the following issues: - Roof sheets and cap pieces are made of metal sheets layered overtop of one another, which the homeowner describes as looking "trashy." - Siding was cut at the bottom and slid up under the flashing, left looking unfinished, raising concerns about it ripping off due to high winds. - The new roof design causes water runoff to completely miss the gutters and go straight to the ground. - Two vents on one side of the house were eliminated during the replacement.
