Is $2,000 to install critter guard for solar panels a fair price?
Project Details
I have been asked to pay $2,000 for the job of installing critter guard for my solar panels. I am wondering if it is worth it and if others have used it, either self-installed or through a contractor. My home is newly built, and the roof is not steep. I have 22 panels, and the array is mostly rectangular with a C-section. I am asking my current contractor to add this to the signed contract.

Add critter guard to a solar installation
This quote is for the addition of critter guard to a planned solar panel installation. The homeowner is concerned about squirrels, which are present due to a large oak tree next to the house, potentially damaging the solar panel wiring. While the installer initially suggested it might not be necessary due to cables being enclosed in conduit, the homeowner is concerned about possible exposed cable sections. After considering potential disadvantages like trapping leaves, damaging shingles, or complicating re-roofing, the homeowner decided to proceed with the critter guard based on community advice. - Purpose: Protect solar panel wiring from squirrels and other critters - Rationale: Presence of squirrels on the roof near the planned solar panel installation - Installer's initial view: Critter guard likely unnecessary due to cables being enclosed in conduit - Homeowner's concern: Potential for exposed cable sections despite conduit - Decision: Homeowner opted to add critter guard to the contract
