Is $500 to install a booster duct fan a fair price?

Project Details

I'm replacing my single 5 ton A/C and Furnace in my 2-story house. The current units are Trane and were installed in 1991. The second floor is always hot in the summer and always cold in the winter. I've replaced the windows and I'm about to air seal and add bat insulation to the attic. I'm getting multiple quotes for the work, and all contractors agree that ideally I'd have two units with appropriate ductwork to adequately isolate the first floor trunk from the second floor, but that's not the current setup. One contractor said they've had luck using Booster Duct Fans to get more conditioned air to the second floor, while another doesn't offer them, believing they don't affect comfort enough.

Quote Details

This quote is for the installation of a single booster duct fan. The fan is proposed as a solution to improve air circulation and deliver more conditioned air to the second floor of the house, aiming to alleviate existing temperature imbalances where the second floor is consistently hot in the summer and cold in the winter. - Purpose: Improve conditioned air delivery to the second floor- Goal: Alleviate temperature imbalances (hot in summer, cold in winter) on the second floor

Install a total HVAC system replacement with two units or a zoning system

This quote outlines options for a total HVAC system replacement to address inadequate temperature control in a two-story home currently relying on a single-zone damper system. The proposed solutions aim to resolve the issue where the existing Honeywell damper only actuates with fan control, leading to the second floor being either too cold or too hot depending on the time of day. - Option 1: Installation of two dedicated HVAC units, one for each floor, allowing for independent temperature control. - Option 2: Implementation of a comprehensive zoning system, likely utilizing a single main HVAC unit with multiple dampers and thermostats to manage airflow and temperature across different zones (floors) of the house.
