Is $30,000 to renovate kitchen with existing cabinets a fair price?

Project Details

My husband and I are renovating our house, including new floors and painting walls. We are deciding whether to fully remodel the kitchen with new cabinets and layout changes or renovate with the existing 1979 dark walnut particleboard cabinets. My contractor says the current cabinets are old and cheap. Our budget is $50k, but we could afford up to $55k. We plan for this to be our forever home (20+ years). The existing cabinets are particleboard with wood veneer, and some shelves need fixing. The kitchen is north facing and naturally dark, making the super dark cabinets challenging. We are looking for input on whether to renovate or remodel, and ideas to make the current cabinets work if we keep them.

Refresh kitchen with new cabinets, island, appliances, and countertops

This quote outlines a comprehensive kitchen refresh for a 30-year-old home, focusing on modern design, functionality, and inviting aesthetics. The project includes significant updates to cabinetry, layout, appliances, and finishes. - Cabinets: Bellmont brand, cherry wood, with dark green/saguaro lowers. Interior construction will utilize both birch plywood and maple particle board. - Flooring: Existing white oak floors will be retained. - Layout Modifications: Addition of a 5' x 5' island and a 36" pantry in place of a metal shelf. - Island Features: Includes a waste pullout, a 15.5" wine cooler, and a 15" overhang for seating. - Cooking Appliances: Installation of an induction cooktop, a separate wall oven, and a microwave on a shelf above the oven. A Vent-a-Hood hood, rated to an equivalent 375 CFM, will be installed. - Countertops & Backsplash: Consideration of quartz materials (initially Cambria Whitendale, also shopping Cesarstone and Silestone) for durability, low maintenance, and timeless appeal. An initial quote for countertops was approximately $6,000. - Other Appliances: Primarily Bosch appliances, along with a 36" GE French Door refrigerator requiring plumbing. - Sink: Undermounted single basin in stainless steel. - Lighting: Installation of gimbal lights and wafers, complemented by a statement pendant light above the island. - Demolition & Installation: A general contractor will manage both the demolition of existing elements and the installation of new components. - Existing Elements to be Replaced/Removed: Current upper cabinets will be salvaged for use in a laundry closet or garage. A water-damaged lower cabinet under the sink will be replaced. Existing Formica countertops, which are chipping, and a small, deteriorating Home Depot island will be removed. All current appliances will be replaced.
